LETTERS FROM MR SWATTS RECEIVED BY JACKIE: MR. ROBERT W. SWATTS 190 West King Street Franklin, Indiana April 22d. 1962. Jackie Ackerman 1430 Orchard Drive Cedar Palls, Iowa. Dear Jackie, To say that I was surprised and happy to hear from you is really stating it very mildly. Indeed it is a pleasure that your class is going to realize the plan of going to our nations capitol for your Senior Year Glass trip as we dreamed of several years ago - when you were all seventh graders. Please let me know that details of time for this trip for, in case you are routed thru Indianapolis, I would like to meet the train and say Hello to everybody once again. I assume that you will travel by rail - but bus is possible, I know. I am enclosing a self-addressed airmail stamped envelope for your convenience in replying. Also tell me about your plans for commencement. Our school here is completed on June 1st. I would like very much to see your graduation exercises. After I left Cedar Falls, I went to summer school at the University of California (Berkeley Campus), accepted a teaching position (Mathematics) in Los Angeles California for one year, the following summer took advanced work at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind.f and then came here to Franklin, Indiana, to teach in Franklin High School. I have been here for four years including the year about to end. My life here is very interesting. Franklin is the first county seat south of Indianapolis - a wonderful community with many wonderfully splendid people. I shall never forget my year in Iowa; so sorry that things did not get worked out so that I could have stayed there, but such I find is Life. I remember so gratefully Mr. Jackson who was teaching in the High School when I was there. I understand he was retired the year following my leaving Cedar Falls. Won't you please find out about him and his good wife, and drop me a line or two about them when you write to me again. Your letter brought back many, many fine memories. My best wishes to all of you. It would be so fine to see each of you again. Most sincerely yours, Robert W. Swatts. |
Lab Teacher and UNI Prof DiesCEDAR FALLS, Iowa---- A former University of Northern Iowa professor and Malcolm Price Laboratory School teacher died last month at Eagle Crest Rehabilitation Center in Ash Flat, Arkansas. N. Marshall Schools, 96, died March 20, 2012. She came to Cedar Falls and the university in 1949 when it was still Iowa State Teachers College.
After graduating from Averett College, Mary Washington College and what is now Vanderbilt University, Schools spent 10 years as a coach and educator in Virginia. She came to UNI as an assistant professor of physical education and stayed with the university until her retirement in 1976 as an associate professor with emeritus status. During her time at UNI she was a teacher at the Price Lab, co-authored two physical education curriculum books and staunchly advocated women's sports at both the state and district levels, according to her niece, Libbie Geiger. 7906 E. Century Blvd. Paramount, California February 4th. 1958 The Eighth Grade Class Teachers College High School Cedar Falls, Iowa. Dear Boys and Girls: It was splendid of you to write me the letters about your appreciation of the dates. I have read everyone of them with a, great deal of interest, and fond memories of our year together. Many of you were interested in "The Little Red Wagon". I don't know what I would do without it. It has over 107,000 miles on it. The unbelievable thing about it is that I have one of my five original tires still on the ground, and that the motor hasn't even had a set of rings, yet I do not have to add any oil between changes, and am getting 17 miles per gallon of gas. I think it is about the best buy I have ever made in my life. I did see the Tournament of Roses, and the Rose Bowl Game again this year. I sent to Dr. Harper one of the special editions of the paper about it. I imagine that she has shown it to you. The copies of the edition were mailed out so late that they did not have the appeal that they would had they bean mailed earlier. I am sending Ardie a Jumbo Post Card of the Los Angelas Coliseum in which the Dodgers will play until they get thelr new park built. It will require an expensive overhaul to change it from the football grid to an acceptable baseball diamond. I hope that he shows the card to you. This stadium was originally built for the 1932 Olympic Games. Well, Chili Supper time is rolling around again. I won't be there to take part. I wish you great success and am enclosing a little check to help matters a bit. I would like very much to know how much your fund is increased this year by this event. By the way, how much do you have in your fund now? After all the smoke clears away and you get a minute or two to spare, I would appreciate hearing from you about how the finances for your senior year trip is coming along. Don't forget - I am expecting you to be the first class from SCHS that goes to the nation's Capitol on that trip. Best of everything to each and all of you, and to all the good teachers that are taking care of you now. Very sincerely yours, Robert W. Swatts |
REVIEW OF "ANNIE GET YOUR GUN" IN THE CEDAR FALLS DAILY RECORD:
GREAT SHOW! Some people have the idea that high school productions are for PARENTS ONLY. We all love seeing our own youngsters perform. - But the State College High School production of "Annie Get Your Gun" was for everyone. For the third night Monday the SCHS auditbrium in Cedar Palls was filled to capactiy to see these young people perform. Those who saw it will be talking about this production for some time to come. It was so professional and the stars were so outstanding . . . that you couldn't believe you were attending a high school musicale. Dave Adamson was handsome as Frank Butler. It was no wonder that perky little Nancy Schmidt, as Annie Oakley, fell in love. By the way, Dave who is normally red haired, had his hair dyed for the production. How about that for going all the way for the play? The combo providing the music outshone a lot of professional groups we've heard for shows. |
This Reunion is number Fifty!
The Lab School surely was nifty. But now it all ends. New teaching trends? Nah - the State is just being thrifty. David Adamson |
A university high school is fab.
But are there reasons to crab? You're in a fishbowl, Experiment or control, Begs the question, at what price lab? Karl Knutson |
